Krakatoa is known for a devastating eruption in August 1883. The slain eruption about 36,000 people on nearby islands. The generated huge waves of up to 130 feet (40 meters) high. The eruption heard nearly 3000 miles (4800 km) away, had global effects. Volcanic dust in the atmosphere caused spectacular red sunsets over the next three years in the northern hemisphere. Early afternoon on August 26 Krakatoa exploded in 1883 with a series of roars heard from Rangone – Burma to Perth – Australia. A column of ash and pumice os rose 26 km into the sky.
