Krakatau – a volcano in the Sunda Strait in Indonesia, between the islands of Sumatra and Java. It is also known as Krakatoa and much of the volcano is underwater. But some of IT projects over the water in the form of islands of Krakatau, Anak Krakatau, Long, and Verlaten. The volcano rises 2667 feet (813 meters) above sea level.

Krakatoa is known for a devastating eruption in August 1883. The slain eruption about 36,000 people on nearby islands. The generated huge waves of up to 130 feet (40 meters) high. These waves, called tsunamis, washed ashore and left most of the deaths. Other people were killed by scalding ash and other material shot out of the volcano. The eruption heard nearly 3000 miles (4800 km) away, had global effects. Volcanic dust in the atmosphere caused spectacular red sunsets over the next three years in the northern hemisphere. The volcanic dust may also have been the cause of a worldwide drop in temperature that lasted five years.

Early afternoon on August 26 Krakatoa exploded in 1883 with a series of roars heard from Rangone – Burma to Perth – Australia. A column of ash and pumice os rose 26 km into the sky. Rock and dust rained over the surrounding area, forming a carpet clound which made day to night for 150 miles in all directions. Ash from the eruption gradually spread throughout the atmosphere, creating a spectacular sunset over the world in two years. The finale came followoing morning, when a gap in the mouth crust of the earth – eroded by the explosion of 18 cubic km of ash rock – collapsed on itself. Sea rushed in and began to boil immediately upon contact with him melted stone. Throws up tsunami (tidal waves), 10 meters high. The waves could still be detected one day and half later, when she finally rolled off against the French. Near Krakatau, the destruction was unbelievable proportion.

The small coastal towns and Anyer Merak was wiped out. Nobody knows the exact toll of the explosion in human life, but a common figure cited is 35,000. Eyewitness described a wall of water “longer than a palm tree” swepping away everything in its path. In Teluk onerous Sumatera, the funnel effect of a narrow bay waves lifted to a height of 30 feet, carrying a Dutch gunboat more than 2 km inland. When the waves had dropped away and the dust dispersed, three quaters of Karakatu was gone.
The maximum of Shaved were still close to its original height, but its northern half is gone, sheared away as a knife, leaving a steep cliff hurtling 300 feet into the sea below. Thurs islands, panjang and Sertung has been toitaly re-shaped, while the waste from the outbreak were merged to islands further away.

Krakatoa and its vicinity remained in a state of geological flux for some time. The new island disappeared in a few years, but volcanic activity continued in the area, and in January 1928 a new edge of the crater occurred near where the first valve of Krakatoa erupted. Since then Anak Krakatau – the child of Karakatau, has continued to grow and now stands 150 tall. This “Baby Island” gives scientists a fascinating opportunties the colonization of plants and animals to observe the new bottom

The 1883 eruption destroyed much of Krakatau Island. This also led to one of the volcano’s summit to go below the water surface, forming a submerged caldera (crater). Outbreaks from 1927 to 1930 Anak Krakatau created in Caldera center.

Indonesia – an archipelago consisting of over 17, 000 islands, a volcanic arc that spreads over two thousand miles from Sumatra in the west to Papua in the east. In the heart of the Coral Triangle, a region that scientists believe holds the planets highest concentration of marine biodiversity, Indonesia certainly plays host to some of the world’s finest dive sites. Natural quality of a dive is purely subjective, but here are my top five for diving in Indonesia.

Pantee Peunateng, Pulau Weh, Sumatra: This high adrenalin diving is very sensitive, making it an intense experience, even when conditions are quieter than most. A reef edge with dramatic steep walls usually have strong currents that attract many species of pelagic fish. Black and white tip is often seen as larger fish, attracted by the nutrients brought in by ocean currents include whale sharks, mola mola and Mantas. Not for the faint hearted Pantee Peunateng is definitely a wild experience

Lekaun One, Bunaken Island, North Sulawesi: The infamous Lekaun dive sites have always been on many a passenger list while scuba diving in Indonesia. The flat reef that surrounds the island to dive hundreds of meters to create a dramatic wall covered with hard and soft corals desperate fight for space. Hunting reef shark and trevally can often be seen working their way up on the reef, while the giant green turtles rest in racks on the wall.

The Crossing, Raja Ampat: One of the more popular dive sites of Raja Ampat and only 50-10 meters deep it forms a river as sea inlet, where many passengers snake out to meet the underwater caves. A truly mystical experience is one of many in the region like it. Tree canopies overhead close to it while the sun rays bring the dramatic colors of the reef.

Hairball, Lembeh Strait, North Sulawesi: The macro life, there are few places on earth that can compare with the Lembeh Strait. The black sand slope at Hair Ball is hosting a great abundance of marine life. On a typical dive here, you can expect to find many types of octopus, eels, snake, frogs, fish, star gazers and nudibranchs (sea slugs), where in other parts of the world, these observations will be few and far between.

Langkoi Rock, Komodo: A submerged Pinnacle found not far from Langkoi Island to the southwest of Komodo makes an interesting dive. The walls surrounding the high point drop off steeply to great depths. Postponed to strong currents and waves, it attracts many types of sharks, including gray reefs, white tips, hammer sharks and bronze whalers. Many believe it is a breeding ground for many gray sharks. Langkoi Rock is a real heart pounding experience diving.
